IPL3. Day 9. Match 14. Mumbai Indians Vs Royal Challengers

The rampaging Mumbai Indians were done in in one over of Vinay Kumar. He grabbed the limelight by removing Sachin Tendulkar, Dwayne Bravo and Ambati Rayudu in one over.

Though benifited by excellent start overs by Steyn at his best and Praveen with his prodigious swing & changes of pace, and aggressive spin bowling by Anil Kumble,Vinay's one over turned the game Royal Challenger's way, and left them a manageable total to chase.

Jaysurya perished early and Tare followed him quickly. Tendulkar missed the line & his leg stumpp got knocked over for a well made 25 of 22. The flood gate opened during the over Bravo was out LBW to a ball that kept a bit low and Ambadi smartly taken by Boucher of Vinay.

Reasonable displays by young Tiwary 25 of 21, Satish 24 of 22 and Pollard 21 of 19 added up to Mumbai Indians total. Lusty blows at the end over by Zaheer 23 of 9, swelled Mumbai Indians score to a reasonable 151 for 9. With Zaheer, Malinga,Harbhajan, Bravo, Pollard, Satish and Jaysurya, Mumbai Indians had enough armoury to defend the total. MI also had the home advantage.

RC had different ideas. Kallis and Pandey blasted MI bowlers to all corners. Pandey was taken for a well made 40 of 27, which set the pace. Kallis remained unbeaten on a brisk 65 of 53 and the Challengers finished the match in the 19th over with 155 for three and winning by seven wickets. Zaheer bowled with venom for his 1 for 18 of 4. Malinga had no wicket against his name but was his usual best.

This match still could have gone to the wire , but for unimaginative bowling by Harbhajan. If some one have watched him closely, he has become more angular in his run up and the Doosra is totally out of his fold. He tries to thrive on the top spinner more, and hence tends to be faster of the pitch . Present day batsmen are more with eye hand coordination and plays the ball through the line with the full swing of the bat. Top spinner is not the weapon in such circumstances.

Bajji must get back to his basics on use of width of the crease & use of the Loop which will give him the spin. Currently he is the most over rated player and does not really deserve a place.

With World Cup T20 round the corner, India is still without an effective bowling combination.

Given a choice, I would go for Zaheer,Praveen, Vinay, Sangwan, Amit Mishra, Ashwin; Murli Kartik to complete the bowling line up. How I would love to have Kumble in the line up. On batting, we are so strong, we could probably select a dozen sides of batsmen.

Signing off for the day and will be back on Day 10 with more .
